What the KTEO is
The periodic roadworthiness test — the Greek equivalent of the British MOT — checks whether the vehicle is safe for the road. On the inspection line we measure brakes and steering with instruments, check suspension, lights, tyres, bodywork and the underside of the vehicle, and measure emissions too. For cars, the first test is due 4 years after first registration and then every 2 years. See when yours is due with our deadline calculator.
What the Emissions Control Card is
The KEK certifies that your vehicle’s emissions are within the legal limits. For petrol vehicles we measure carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and check the catalytic converter; for diesels we measure smoke opacity. For most vehicles it is renewed every year — more often than the KTEO.
Can they be done together?
Yes, but they do not have to be. If your KEK expires close to your KTEO deadline, we do both in one visit. If not, the KEK is done separately in a few minutes, whenever it suits you.
- I passed the KTEO — do I still need a KEK? Yes, it is a separate requirement with its own deadline.
- I got a KEK — does that replace the KTEO? No. The KEK only covers emissions.

How to pass the emissions measurement easily
- Arrive with a warm engine, after 15–20 minutes of driving.
- If the engine warning light is on, get it checked before the test.
- On diesels, a lot of black smoke when accelerating is a sign the smoke measurement may come out high.
